Fly from San Jose
FLYING TO MALPAIS |
Tambor is 55 minutes to Malpais. Try to arrive in Costa Rica on an early flight to make your connection to Tambor, otherwise it may be necessary to stay in San Jose for the night.
Two domestic airlines fly from SJO to Tambor:

After arriving to San Jose you can take a 30 minute flight to Tambor - We will arrange a taxi to pick you up in Tambor. The drive to Santa Teresa from Tambor is approximately 35-40 minutes and the cab fare approximately $55.00

Drive to Santa Teresa
From San José: Drive to Puntarenas ( 1 1/2 hours) and take the "Tambor" car ferry to Paquera.You will be on the ferry for approximately an hour and a half or so. Drive through Tambor to Cóbano. In Cóbano drive straight through town and turn left after 1 kilometer to Malpaís. After 8 km, a total of approximately an hour from getting off the ferry, you will arrive at a crossroads just before the beach, turn right and the Blue Surf Sanctuary hotel is approx 3kms on your left. 4x4 is not necessary, but is recommended in the rainy season. Total journey time from San José is 5 ½ hours, as we recommend that you arrive at Puntarenas at least one hour before the ferry departs.
One can also take a bus from San Jose. The bus is very inexpensive and takes about 6 hours.
It is a relatively comfortable air conditioned bus.
A private shuttle van can also be hired as another means to get to Santa Teresa. We will be happy to help arrange this for you! |
